About Brandon Florida
Brandon, Florida is one of the so-called “bedroom communities" surrounding the great Tampa metropolitan area.
Established in January of 1867, it was John Brandon who came to Fort Brooke from Mississippi with his wife and sons, having purchased 40 acres of property. He later went on to purchase an additional 160 acres. He named the area after himself, thus giving the city it's modern name of Brandon.
Initially, the city centered around Brandon's Victorian home, and the New Hope Church
that was nearby. The church also served as the city's first school for a number of years. The city saw growth once the Florida Central Railroad come to the area. The citizens of Brandon decided to build a train depot on Moon Avenue.
The city remained mostly tied to agriculture until the early 1960s. It was then that the Brandon Chamber Of Commerce was formed to help establish and foster growth in business. At this time, the city's population was about 8,000 and reports from that time indicate that about one new family per month were moving into the city limits. It was around this time that the first shopping mall was built. Again adopting the city's namesake, Brandon Center was built and open for business in the early 1960s. With families moving to the area, it was decided to establish the Kingswood Elementary school, the Brandon public library along several housing developments and golf courses. Given the weather for this location in Florida, it was found that the sunshine and humidity were beneficial for golf, and this, along with other commerce helped the city to see yet more growth.
It was in the 1970s that rapid growth came to Brandon, and with it, there was for the first time, traffic congestion. Now that the city had over 400 businesses, and the population had swelled to over 40,000 citizens within less than a 10-mile radius. Along with this new burst in population, a a new hospitaland cultural center were constructed in the middle of the 1970s.
Brandon experienced another surge of growth during the 1980s. The southernmost area quickly filled up with new families and individuals who had decided to call the city their home. In 1986, Interstate 75 started to bring traffic tough the area; the arrival of the new Interstate and its traffic helped the area grow to almost 60,000 residents by 1990.
Although a small city in comparison to Tampa or Miami, Brandon does lay claim to a fair share of citizens who have gone on to become famous. This list of people includes professional sports players, the military, and the writer K. Wayne Tope, known for his novel “The Legend Of Sampler's Ridge"
