About Valrico Florida
Prior to the American Civil War, the city of Valrico was known as "Long Pond". The area mainly consisted of several cotton plantations. It was during this era that the city was renamed "Valrico" which of course is Spanish for "rich valley". It was during the 1880s that William Tousey who had come from Tufts College purchased land in the area. In the following decade, in the 1890s there arrived an influx of immigrants which kickstarted the construction and building of a new railroad known as the Florida Central and Peninsular.
Once the new railroad had been completed, Mr. Tousey started to build up the surrounding community with retail operations, formal streets, avenues, and a bank. He was stopped in making progress in 1895, when, suddenly, the population of the area reversed its previous course and declined rather than increasing. The town, ever hopeful, decided to carry on and decided to build a much-needed schoolhouse. The ground was broken and the construction of the new school began in earnest in 1896. Despite its best efforts, the population of Valrico continued to dwindle until there were approximately only 50 citizens in the year 1911. Eventually, the Valrico Sand Stone Company came into full operation. This company was responsible for supplying the materials for the construction of the Valrico Civic Center, one of the new banking buildings, and last but not least, a new train depot that was completed in 1915. From Cincinnati came the Fugazzi Brothers along with their experience in the citrus trade. It was with this knowledge that the brothers founded the Florida Citrus Exchange and allowed them to open packing plants near the new depot, so that citrus goods could be carried far and wide throughout the United States.
Determined to move forward, local landowners gathered together and plotted out how to best develop the town. There were a group of landowners including Judge Hamner, Governor Van Sant, D. Humbird, W.H., S.C. Phipps, and W.F. Miller who put stakes in the ground as the "Valrico Improvement Association" and with a few thousand dollars in hand, decided to build the Valrico Civic Center. In the current times, the establishment is more well known by its current name, the "James McCabe Theatre". Eventually, there were enough people living in the town to support retail establishments, and the first general store was opened in 1912 by Mr. Lovett Brandon.
Despite the growth and acceleration that the city had seen, it was subject to the great downturn that most of America experience with the stock market crash of 1929. Shortly thereafter, almost every business in town had gone out of business. As luck would have it, during the mid-1950s, the city had a unique opportunity come to it in the form of a new road, SR 65, which placed the town right in the middle of a new thoroughfare that connected it to the rest of Florida.
